upon the 100th anniversary of birth of Slovenian painter and graphics artist Zoran Music (1909-2005), National Gallery director Barbara Jaki has told STA.

Koper is a Slovenian city that is right on the border with Italy. Koper was originally built on an island very near the shore. Now the island is a peninsula as a straight that has been filled in. The Golden Age of Koper was during the 15th and 16th centuries and was controlled by the Venetian Republic. Currently Koper is Slovenia’s only port city and it is a business and industrial center.

In late September, Tone Zafosnik, at 81 years of age and an otherwise-retired vintner, collected his basket and began harvesting the grapes of his favourite vine.

Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and even though there are over 300,000 residents the city has the charm of a much smaller city. Ljubljana is one of the more colorful cities in the Balkan region and there are no shortages of sights and things to do.

Slovenia's parliament has overwhelmingly selected Borut Pahor as the tiny Alpine country's new prime minister on November 7, 2008. Pahor's Social Democrats won the most votes in the September 21 elections and later sealed a coalition deal with three other parties to secure the necessary majority in the 90-seat chamber.

One man's frightening encounter with the greatwhite shark in the Adriatic, just ten metres off the shore of the remote island of Vis, central Dalmatia, has made headlines in Croatia and confirmed suspicions of the predator's presence in the Adriatic. Older locals remember a shark attack in the central Adriatic that claimed the life of a German tourist. Divers had felt safe after 40 years of shark inactivity.

The Graduate School of Design (GSD) at Harvard University decided to put on an exhibit this September titled New Trajectories: Contemporary Architecture in Croatia and Slovenia, exploring innovative displays of architecture throughout these countries. The exhibit was intended to encompass a series of lectures in hopes of becoming an annual event.

Nadškofija Ljubljana se s sporazumom, sklenjenim 14. oktobra 2008 med Župnijo Bled in Ministrstvom za kulturo, odpoveduje zahtevku za vrnitev Blejskega otoka, eventualnim pripadajočim odškodninskim zahtevkom in v zadevi umika pritožbo pred Evropskim sodiščem za človekove pravice v Strasbourgu. V posest Župnije Bled bodo vrnjene še preostale stavbe na otoku, ki omogočajo nadaljevanje večstoletne tradicije duhovnega in kulturnega utripa na tem prostoru. Ob tem bo župnija upravičencem povrnila vlaganja, ki so povečala vrednost predmetnih stavb in objektov.

The Ljubljana Archdiocese and the Culture Ministry have finally reached an agreement on the ownership of the Bled island, one of Slovenia's best known landmarks. The island on the lake Bled will remain state-owned, while the buildi on the island, including the famous church, will be given to the Bled parish.

Waterford Crystal, a glittering icon of Ireland, announced Thursday it will lay off most of its Irish work force and move its factory production overseas after losing a six-year battle to boost sales, cut costs and control debts.

"We regret the necessity of ending large-scale manufacturing in Waterford, but we reaffirm our commitment to the city," said chief executive John Foley, referring to the company's 61-year-old base in the southeast Irish city of the same name.

It didn't say where the work was going but the company has contracted much of its production to a manufacturer in Slovenia.
