Slovenia House Now Open

A pleasant get-together and a surprise for the evening marked the opening of the Slovenia House in the heart of Whistler Village. Although the weather in Whistler is far from a winter fairy-tale, the Slovenia House was all about winter and winter sports. Many members of the Slovenian Olympic Team attended the opening, with ski jumpers being the most numerous.

Guests from other Olympic Committees, Slovenian and foreign media representatives, Whistler community members, Slovenian expatriates and other friends of Slovenia also attended the opening.

Majdic overcomes injury to win bronze in sprint

Wednesday, February 17, was a special day for Slovenia: Petra Majdič won a medal in cross-country skiing in Vancouver.

A few hours later, after somehow finding a way to complete three heats of cross-country sprints despite a rib cage throbbing from a training crash, she was still in agony as she hobbled up on the podium for a flower ceremony - with a bronze medal to her name.

Although badly injured and in pain after skidding off the track in an icy left turn and plunging into a ditch several feet deep, the 30-year-old Majdič insisted on continuing to compete and completed four more runs to secure a bronze medal.

Vancouver Olympic Games 2010

Slovenians are well-represented in the the XXI Winter Olympic Games, held in Vancouver, Canada, from February 12 until February 28.

Vancouver 2010More than 2,500 contestants from over 80 countries will compete for 86 sets of medals. The town of Whistler in British Columbia, Canada, will be the venue where most events will be held, whereas the opening ceremony will take place at the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, indoors for the first time in the history of Olympic Games.

Slovenia will be represented at the Olympics by 47 athletes, which is the largest delegation of athletes to the winter Olympics in Slovene history. Seventeen women and thirty men will compete in ten different Olympic events, ranging from alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, skijumping, snowboarding, and figure skating to skeleton and freestyle skiing

Slovenia House at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games

For the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, the Olympic Committee of Slovenia (OCS) and the Government Communication Office (UKOM) together with the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Ottawa are organising Slovenia House, which will bring together Slovenian sport, culture, economy, tourism and promotional activities. Slovenia House will be located in the Mountain Club of the Westin Resort Hotel at the heart of Whistler Village.

Vancouver 2010

Slovenia House opens its doors to the public on 11 February and will be presenting an exciting programme until the conclusion of the Winter Games. Every day between 5 and 6 pm, there will be meetings with different guests, ranging from athletes, business representatives, partners, media representative and other visitors. Slovenian athletes will be the main focus of attention at Slovenia House, where they will be able to mingle with other guests. There will be a special reception to celebrate every Slovenian medal.

Slovenian Jerman wins men's World Cup downhill

BORMIO, Italy — Slovenia's Andrej Jerman won the men's World Cup downhill here on Tuesday, his second victory on the international ski circuit.

Jerman, who had dominated training, finished the course in 2min 00:32sec, 0.53sec ahead of Switzerland's Didier Defago, with Austria's reigning World Cup champion in the discipline, Michael Walchhofer, in third at 1:03sec.

The Slovenian benefited from excellent early light conditions to produce a near flawless display down the gruelling 3.2km-long course that featured several spectacular jumps.
