World War I: The Soča-Isonzo Front and Slovenia

By Dr. Vladimir Rus

Cleveland State University - The Center for Slovenian Studies & The Department of Modern Languages

The Soča-Isonzo Front and SloveniaWednesday, February 24, 2010

3:00 p.m.  Main Classroom 134

During the First World War, the 12 battles of the Soča-Insonzo Front were fought on unbelievably beautiful, yet treacherous territory in present-day Slovenia and Italy. Flanked by high mountains, through which flowed the crystal green alpine river Soča (in Italian, Isonzo), this was not a prime location for any combat, let alone 12 hard-fought battles.

Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms was based on the author’s personal experiences as an ambulance driver in one of the battles. Surprisingly, besides this novel, very little else has been written in English on the topic of the Italian Front, where both sides lost a combined 300,000 soldiers.

Cleveland State University Slovenian Language Classes

There are still a few seats left in the Slovenian Language classes at Cleveland State University which are taught by Luka Zibelnik from the Faculty of Arts of University of Ljubljana.

Luka Zibelnik is a trained and experienced instructor in teaching Slovenian to American students whose first language is English. His courses emphasize language teaching, but also incorporate material on Slovene history, culture, literature and even daily life in modern Slovenia

The classes begin on January 20th, 2010 and end on May the 5th. The Beginning Slovenian (MLA 196) class meets at 4:00 to 5:50 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. Intermediate Slovenian (MLA 296) also meets on Mondays and Wednesdays but at 6:00 to 7:50 pm. Students paying full tuition can obtain college credit for both classes.

Beginning a language course in the middle of the year means that the beginning student has some knowledge of the Slovenian language and for the Intermediate class, an ample amount of very basic Slovenian grammar is needed. As an extra incentive for those with empty nests, students over the age of 60 may take these Slovenian Language classes at no cost except for the textbooks.

AMLA 2009 Children’s Christmas Party

AMLA 2009 Children’s Christmas Party

The annual Children’s Christmas Party was held on Sunday, December, 13th at the Slovenian National Home on St. Clair Ave.  The weather was rainy but at least there was no snow and over one thousand members attended the party this year. We had over 500 children come to the party this year to visit with Santa and receive a gift! The planning committee would like to thank all those that make this AMLA most popular event of the year. There are so many people who work together to make this party a success. Thank you to the board of directors, the fraternal affairs coordinators and all the volunteers that come to work on both Saturday and Sunday. Your efforts are greatly appreciated and we couldn’t do it without you.  Thank you also to the Zab brothers again this year who worked so hard to set up the train display in the main hall I know so many people look forward to seeing the train display year after year. Many lodges donated baked goods or sent in donations towards cookies to be enjoyed by everyone. There was plenty of Slovenian sausage and hot dogs this year. Thank you to the kitchen staff who prepared all the food. It is very gratifying to hear so many people had a wonderful time.

I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
