Slovenia Ranks 20th on the World Prosperity Index

Bookmark and Share

Ljubljana, October 28 - Slovenia ranks 20th on the world prosperity scale, a report published on Tuesday by UK-based research institute Legatum has found. Finland leads the world, followed by other Scandinavian countries, while Zimbabwe is last, behind Yemen and Sudan.

The prosperity index is based on a definition of prosperity that combines economic growth together with measures of happiness and quality of life. The research looked at factors related to economic fundamentals, entrepreneurship, education, democratic institutions, governance, health, personal freedom, and security.

“Slovenia was propelled to its position through its performance on education, security, and its government’s capacity for fostering economic growth,” the report says.

Slovenia ranked highest -- eighth -- out of 104 countries, in security and education. The report says that Slovenia’s crime rate is low, making the majority of citizens feel safe.

In democratic institutions, Slovenia ranks 16th, mostly because these institutions are relatively young, while in health and governance, it ranks 24th. In personal freedom, it ranks 33rd.

Six of the top 10 countries in the 2009 prosperity index are located in Europe: Finland, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands. The United States ranks 9th.
