American Cruiser Stops For Fun and Sun in Koper

Captain Nygaard

The USS Vicksburg, a Ticonderoga class cruiser, made a welcome respite in Koper after a six-month tour in the Arabian Sea. The ship is part of the Eisenhower carrier group and is responsible for the defense of the massive aircraft carrier. The ship has a crew of 370 sailors and officers and is equipped for anti-submarine and anti-aircraft warfare. The ship also carries two helicopters as part of its arsenal.

While the crew of the Vicksburg enjoyed the hospitality and the weather of the Primorska region, the Commanding Officer, Captain Chuck Nygaard, provided tours and interviews for the Slovenian press, including Delo and PopTV. He also graciously hosted a reception for Embassy staff, Slovenian officials, and local notables.

The Vicksburg is enroute back to its homeport in Mayport, Florida.
