Slovenia Among 10 Most Peaceful Countries in the World

Bookmark and Share

London/Washington, 2 June (STA) - Slovenia ranks among the top ten countries on the Global Peace Index, issued for the third time by the group Vision of Humanity. Slovenia shares the ninth spot with Finland, rising 7 places from last year’s list.

This makes Slovenia the most peaceful country in central and southeastern Europe, and the most peaceful EU newcomer.

The survey, carried out by the Washington-based Institute for Economics and Peace and London institute Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), measured the index in 144 countries based on 23 criteria.

The criteria included the number of troops in peace missions, respect of human rights, export of arms and relations with neighboring countries.

On the scale from one to five, with one meaning the most peaceful, Slovenia got one for the number of murders per 100,000 people, the number of prisoners, the level of violent crime and respect of human rights.

It scored two for relations with neighboring countries and the likelihood of violent protests, and three for military capability.

New Zealand tops the list, while Iraq trailed the list.
