Maribor Doctors Win American Heart Association Award

Ljubljana, 26 January (STA) - Researchers at the Adolf Drolc Centre for Emergency Medicine in Maribor have received a prestigious award from the American Heart Association for their contribution in the field of resuscitation and emergency care.

The team headed by Stefek Grmec was awarded in November 2008 for its research on how the drug erythropoietin facilitates the return of spontaneous circulation in patients suffering from cardiac arrest.

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ljubljana said in a press release on Monday that the project was especially precious because of the transfer of laboratory findings in adapted form to the prehospital environment. The findings should improve the care offered to cardiac arrest patients by paramedic crews.

The research of the Maribor centre was picked among 1,500 projects in the field and was the only non-US project awarded among a total of 4,000 presented at the congress of the American Heart Association in New Orleans.

The team from Slovenia conducted its research with the help of professor Raul J. Gazmuri of the Rosalind Franklin University of North Chicago and pharmaceutical company Roche.
