Gornjansko, Home to Slovenian Organic Wine

Bookmark and Share

Branko Cotar has been the master of his own organic winery, hidden in Gorjansko, Slovenia a Karst region near Italian border since 1974.

Cotar owns seven hectare ofcertified organic land, averaging 30 centimeters of soil on top of the limestone.

The secret to good wine as Cotar knows it is a mixture of “terra rossa,” the deep red, iron-rich topsoil that is brought in to cover the solid limestone, the cooling winds from the sea and mountains lower the temperature at night along with the fierce winter winds of the area known as “bora,” add to the recipe for quality of wines.

Whites such as Vitovska, Malvasia Istriana, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and reds that include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and the native Refosco.
