Slovenian Embassy was very successfully represented by three fast runners, Irena Lukač, Economic Counselor; Mateja Kavaš, Political Counselor; and her spouse, Bojan Kavaš. After dashing through the National Mall, and crossing Potomac to Virginia, they all finished the race at the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial with an excellent time.

Irena, Mateja and Bojan followed the lead of former Slovenian Ambassador to the United States., Samuel Žbogar, who ran the marathon in 2007. Ambassador Žbogar ran four marathons, along with the Washington’s marathon, he participated also in marathons in Austin, TX, Knoxville, TN, and Cleveland, OH. By running marathons, Žbogar was raising funds for rehabilitation of young mine survivors, jointly with the International Trust Fund for Demining and Mine Victims Assistance (ITF) and its partner, the Marshall Legacy Institute (MLI).
