Passing of Fr. Vendelin Spendov

Bookmark and Share

Fr. Metod Ogorevc just called to inform me that Fr. Vendelin Spendov, OFM passed away this morning. His wake will be held in the Chapel of the St. Mary’s Monastery (Custody of the Holy Cross) in Lemont Sunday evening. His funeral mass will be held on Monday at 10am. We are thankful to God for finally taking back home. Fr. Vendelin himself expressed hope for this right before his last stroke. Fr. Vendelin was a priest, pastor and confidant for many of us. For many of us he was the one who taught us an appreciation for Slovenian music; especially liturgical music. He will remembered by many as being one of the first Slovenian composers to create liturgical music in the Post Vatican II era and he did it so well.

His debilitating condition prevented him from playing organ for the past few years. This brought him great sadness because he loved to create music. It is a blessing that he will be able to go back and do again that which brought so much joy to his life and others. I am sure he is thrilled to be able to compare “notes” with all the other composers who have preceded him to eternal glory!
