Colonel Andrej Kocbek as a keynote speaker to close
out their 2009 lecture series. The colonel shared his
personal experiences
and involvement with the
development of
Slovenia’s Armed
Forces.
In his presentation,
Colonel Kocbek
discussed the development of the Slovenian Armed
Forces from its formation prior to Slovenia’s 1991 war
for independence up to its current role as a member of
the NATO Alliance.
Colonel Kocbek is currently the Republic of Slovenia’s National Liaison Representative at
NATO’s Allied Command Transformation (ACT) headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia. His
distinguished military career includes a key role leading Slovenia’s Territorial Defense Forces
during the 1991 war for independence from Yugoslavia. For his exceptional service during
this critical period, Colonel Kocbek was awarded the Honorary Medal of Freedom in 1992, the
highest state decoration that can be granted by the President of the Republic of Slovenia.
Since then, he has held several posts within Slovenia’s Ministry of Defense including Head of
the 710th Conscripts Training Center, Superintendent of the School for Non-Commissioned
Officers, Director of the Center of Military Schools, Defense Counselor to the Mission of the
Republic of Slovenia to the European Union, Defense Attaché at the Embassy of the
Republic of Slovenia to the Benelux Countries, Advisor to the General Staff of the Slovenian
Armed Forces and Assistant to the Chief of General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces.
